Vase 02 Inherited
‘Inherited’ Identity
Vase 02 - Every migrant brings with them an inherited culture to be reconciled, both by the individual him/herself and the host culture. Should one assimilate and adopt to the host culture unequivocally, or strike a balance between the two? Before we can do either, vase 02 recognises the validity of alternative cultural reference points when assessing the diverse make-up of contemporary society. Take any major city and one will find a complex web of transitory communities co-existing but removed from any conversation about the direction and cultural expression of that city as they do not fall into the so-called acceptable cultural narrative. Vase 02 is the second in a series of Vases contributing to the multifaceted and at times divisive conversation around identity.
Language
The facade design employs the humble horse-shoe arch, alternating between a single and double column feature to provide visual interest and emphasis on detail laden with symbolic meaning and evoking a sense of displacement felt by many. Whilst the external appearance is representative of Moorish/Andalusian architecture, it can be substituted with other equally valid traditions as a result of ones inherited culture & heritage. Gold reveals are utilised in contrast to the charcoal texture/industrial language of the main facade in attempting to ensure the design appears less austere, whilst striking a balance between acknowledging the past and embracing ‘generation z’. The facade is made up of the following constituent parts:
ARCH
HORSE-SHOE ARCH
ALTERNATING COLUMN FEATURE
GRID
CHARCOAL & GOLD
Material & Fabrication process
Made from Sandstone with a smooth matte finish. The fabrication method employs the latest techniques in 3D printing by laying down thin layers of powder and selectively binding this powder together to produce the Vase. The textured charcoal and gold finishes are applied using a set of CMYK print-heads to colour the Vase whilst binding the powder together to produce the colorful facades. The Vase is then hand brushed with a two-part epoxy resin, which increases the strength and color of the sandstone vase giving it a beautiful smooth, matte sheen.
The end product is a striking, decorative Vase with fine detail and vivid colours.
